Agüimes

Often overlooked by tourists, the small mountain town of Agüimes has become one of my favorite photo spots on my trip around Gran Canaria. It has a well-preserved old town, which has been a protected historical area for more than 30 years. I just loved strolling through the narrow lanes and seeing all those traditional Canarian buildings in all kinds of colors. They give the town a charming and somewhat timeless character.

Aldea De San Nicolas

Puerto de la Aldea is a cute fishing village in the province of Los Caserones. It is super quiet during the week and mainly serves as a gateway for both hiking and diving. From up the hill opposite the tourist information center, you will have panoramic and totally Insta worthy views of Los Caserones.

Puerto de Mogan

Often referred to as “Venice of Gran Canaria”, this fishing town in the south of the island is full of cute, little houses with well-kept roof gardens. Stone arches covered in hibiscus connect the houses in the narrow lanes. There are small bridges across the channels aside cozy cafés near the waterfront. What more do you want? There are so many details that make Puerto de Mogan a truly romantic place perfect for photography.

Mirador Del Balcon

There’s a very winding but scenic road along the beautiful west coast from Aldea de San Nicolas to Agaete. What you get from here are absolutely stunning views, especially at one of my favorite spot, a viewing point called Mirador del Balcon. The wall you’ll find built into the cliff offers plenty of photo opportunities – from couple shoots to portrait photography.

Presa De Las Ninas

If you’re looking for some nature photography, this place should totally be on your list. I’m pretty sure no other spot is as tranquil and peaceful as Presa de las Ninas. This beautiful blue lake surrounded by differently colored meadows, pine trees, and a few local goats is located in the middle of Gran Canaria’s mountains.

This 80m-high monolith is the icon of Gran Canaria. While the rock formations around are generally pretty fascinating and great spots for photographers, you can especially capture the magic of this place during sunrise or sunset.

El Bufadero de la Garita

Probably one of the coolest nature gems on the island, though only skilled photographers know how to capture it in the perfect way. You’ll definitely need the right timing and rather long exposure time to be able to get the soft water flow. Nevertheless, this place is a gorgeous photography spot, especially early in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun has a flat angle.

Puerto De Las Nieves

The coastal town Puerto de las Nieves is one of my favorite spots on the island and famous for its white and blue buildings that kind of look like transplanted from some Greek island. And they are ideal for photography! The town is renowned for its seafood restaurant scene. Apart from that, it is mostly frequented by local families who like to spend their weekend relaxing on the black, pebbly beach.

Playa Güigüi

It is no secret that parts of Gran Canaria are packed with tourists. However, it is possible to find beaches only the locals know about. While most of them are pebbly beaches, Playa Güigüi on the west coast of Gran Canaria is a gorgeous sandy beach, which you’ll likely have all to yourself – if you make it there. It is entirely off the beaten path and kinda tricky to get to as you’ll need to trek there for a few hours.

Barranco De Las Vacas

Located only a few kilometers from Agüimes, Barraco de las Vacas aka. Toba de Colores is a real hidden gem. You need to trek through a parched riverbed for about 15 minutes until you’ll reach the ravine with flowing curves of reddish stone, very similar to Antelope Canyon in the United States. This secret photo spot is perfect to get a few Insta worthy shots.

This volcanic crater is a fascinating spot not only for photographers but for anyone interested in natural history. Today, the crater is home to all kinds of species of plants as well as plantations. From the top of Pico de Bandama, you’ll also have a great view of Gran Canaria’s north and east coast, including the island of Fuerteventura on a clear day.

Although Gran Canaria’s capital city Las Palmas is the industrial hub of the island and home to 400.000 people, the town offers many Insta worthy gems. One of them is the totally instagrammable neighborhood of San Juan with its colorful houses.

Catedral de Canarias

Las Palmas also offers a gorgeous old town with traditional colonial buildings, which can be easily explored on a walking tour through the district of Vegueta. One of the highlights is the majestic Catedral de Canarias, which also happens to be a lovely photo object.

Maspalomas Sand Dunes

The sand dunes of Maspalomas are a classic when it comes to photography in Gran Canaria. You can get stunning shots if you position yourself on top of one dune and take pictures of someone else on another dune. Mind you, during the day, the sand can be extremely hot, and the sun will boil down. Therefore I recommend coming here right before and during sunset when the light gives the dunes a magical look.
